Putra Public Health Seminar (PPHS)
Community Health Society Malaysia
Community Health Society Malaysia was established on 11th October 2012 by a visionary group of leaders. CHSM is a national association comprising of dedicated public health physician/professionals who have a passion for the field of public health. CHSM is committed to the promotion of healthy life to the community and is in accordance with the definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The purpose and mission of the Society were defined in its constitutional articles, which are to:
- promote community health disciplines to the community through the activities of research, training, consultation and publication
- provide a platform for the development of human capital health professionals in the community to meet the needs of the profession, discipline, and challenges related to community health
- Become a platform for bridging community health professionals with industries and the community through national and international networks.
With the collaboration of public health professionals from various speciality areas such as health service management, epidemiology, biostatistics, occupational and environmental health, family health, as well as health promotion in identifying health characteristics of a certain community, this will help in improving the health of a community, ranging from improving access to medical care to public health communications campaigns. The success of any community health programme relies upon the transfer of information from public health professionals to the general public as a whole.
Public Health Contribution
Even though CHSM is still in its infancy stage, it has successfully contributed to increasing and enhancing public health knowledge through community-based research in public health that focuses on social, structural, and physical environmental inequities through active involvement of community members, organizational representatives, and researchers in all aspects of the research process. Some of the activities include organizing workshops and seminars such as the Health Economics Seminar for Healthcare Professionals, book publishing, grant management, and the latest effort is to create its own e-Journal publication called the International Journal of Public Health and Clinical Sciences.
This e-Journal is hoped to foster learning in many ways. All levels, whether they are students, academicians, or public health professionals, can actively engage in their own learning, scientific research, as well as evidence-based public health practices, and have the opportunity to clarify and reflect upon their thinking and findings.
There is no doubt that there will be challenges in the years to come. As one often says, “The roughest roads often lead to the top”. It is hoped that CHSM will become one of the platforms for all public health professionals to come together and continue to grow to become a well-renowned association that is recognized locally as well as internationally.
